Learn About Our New Staff Members

We are very excited to welcome these fine educators to our school and community! 

Megan Smith is the new English and co-Senior Project teacher. Mrs. Smith traveled all the way from Homer, Alaska with her husband and 2 year-old daughter to be with us in Joseph! She grew-up in Conrad, Montana and graduated from Montana State University with a degree in English. Out of the classroom Mrs. Smith loves being outdoors, going for bike rides, and spending time with her family.

Theresa Stangel is the new Jr. High and Freshman Health/Service Learning (community service/projects based) teacher at Joseph. Ms. Stangel student taught with Marla Dotson in the Family and Consumer Sciences room last spring and also was a volunteer coach for the E/J Cubs softball team. She is a native of Wallowa County and graduated from Enterprise High School. Ms. Stangel attended Oregon State University where she earned a double degree in Education and Human Development and Sciences and minored in Business. Outside of the classroom she works on her family’s bison ranch and loves playing sports and spending time at the lake.


Olan Fulfer is the jack of all trades this year at Joseph. He is going to be teaching 5th/6th P.E. and Social Studies, 7th/8th P.E., and doing some Title 1 work. Mr. Fulfer is also the new Boys Varsity Basketball coach. He is a graduate of Imbler High School and completed his Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s of Arts in Teaching at Eastern Oregon University. Along with being a Joseph Eagle fan, he enjoys watching the Portland Trail Blazers and cheering for the Oregon Ducks. In his off time he enjoys spending time with his wife Tessa, snowboarding, golfing, and playing tennis.

Courtney Lyman is teaching Kindergarten this year at Joseph Charter School. Mrs. Lyman graduated from Eastern Oregon University with a degree in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Emphasis, and a minor in Reading, as well as a Masters of Science in Education. Courtney loves spending time with her two children and husband, she enjoys hiking, skiing, and dancing.


Jennifer Hawkins-Connolly is the new Art teacher at Joseph! She grew-up in Wallowa county and graduated from Enterprise High School. She attended University of Oregon where she graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Fine Art and Art Education (teaching endorsements in Art and Science) and earned a Masters of Science in Art Education, as well as a Masters of Fine Art. Mrs. Connolly taught in several different schools in the Pacific Northwest, including the University of Oregon. She recently moved back to the county to marry her high school sweetheart (Jay Connolly) and raise her son Gabriel, who is an elementary student at Joseph Charter School. Outside of the classroom Jennifer enjoys the outdoors (hiking, backpacking, gardening, etc.) as well as putting her own art skills into practice through photography, sculpture, ceramics, painting and drawing.


Megan Dunaway is originally from Klamath Falls, Oregon, but has found a home in Joseph student teaching with Kendall Hayes in Science this year. She is currently working towards completing her Master’s program through Eastern Oregon University. Megan graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in General Science, as well as a Minor in Chemistry and is an avid Beaver fan! In her free time Megan enjoys painting and completing pop-culture crossword puzzles.
