School Re-opening Plan as of 8.11.2020

posted Aug 11, 2020, 4:06 PM by Angela Gorham

Dear Parents/Guardians – In light of the recent new metrics for our county (as of 1 PM today), we plan to open the fall with face-to-face instruction.  The new metrics exceptions for Wallowa County states:

·         Total County COVID-19 case in the last three weeks is less than 30 total cases, with less than half of cases reported in the last week of the three-week period.

·         We have a reopening blueprint approved by the Oregon Department of Education.

·         Students cannot be part of any single cohort, or part of multiple cohorts that is greater than 50 students.

·         There is no community spread in the school area.

·         There is not community spread in the communities that serve as primary employment and community centers (for shopping and other in-person services)

·         Schools should consider community spread, public health should take into consideration the cases in the community, COVID-19 test availability in the community, recent percent positivity rates, capacity in the community to respond to cases and outbreaks and the regional hospital capacity available for those with severe disease.

·         The school does not serve a significant number of transfer students from outside its area that are from communities reporting COVID-19 community spread in the previous three weeks.

As of today, August 11th, 2020 we meet the new metrics and we are good to open our doors this fall.  What is the timeline for reopening?  There has been a change as described below:

·         August 25th, 26th, and 27th Teacher In-service/Professional Development

·         August 31st – September 3rd – “Soft Opening” where we will have specific classes come in at specific scheduled times that week to go over protocols, structure, class set up, ask questions, etc.  Look for a schedule next week.  Aug. 31st – Sept. 3rd will also allow for our teachers to get more professional development, time to communicate with families, and develop concrete plans for distance learning if, and when our cases jump to where we have to move into distance learning for a period of time.

·         September 8th – First official day back for students on campus!!

If you are opting for Comprehensive Distance Learning Online your schedule will go as follows:

·         Deadline to sign up for the online only option is August 19th

·         August 31st – September 3rd – An assigned teacher will communicate with you and your child about expectations, timelines, how to use Pearson online, and a host of other things.

·         September 8th – First day of official online school!!

We know that pushing off the official start date for school to September 8th may cause a hardship and we apologize, but we feel it is necessary with the circumstances we are facing in returning to school face-to-face.  We are excited to finally feel like we have a solid plan and can move forward with planning for face to face instruction, while planning for the possible quick transition to online instruction due to COVID-19 cases in our school, school community, community, or county.  Stay tuned for more updates to follow.

Thank you so much for your patience and support!

Respectfully,

Lance Homan
